META 2013 – Vistor Trace

Kinect based tracking system and QR code activated webapp to track a visitors’ visit to the show

Kinect, Processing (Java), jquery Mobile, QR Codes

From a new media perspective, the Interface team of META2013 has had the opportunity to rethink the conventions of the exhibit label, the guestbook, & gallery security. In order to enhance visitor interaction as well as inputting and creating a living memory of the event, the three-part project collectively entitled “Visitor Trace” was created.

Interactive Label (& Web App)
Each wall label includes an artist’s designated colour coded icon and QR code. Each of the three colours represents a facet of the piece that relates to the show’s “Active Ingredient” premise. The colour legend can be viewable below. Scan the QR code with your smart phone device or by using one of the available iPads provided at the gallery. You will be lead to the artist’s specific page on the META web app. Additional information about the artist’s piece, the project inspirations/related works, and their contact information can all be found on the app.

It can also be accessed through the META2013 website at meta2013.ca/app

Digital Guestbook
The use of Twitter allows for instant, live communication with visitors and makes our show’s audience interaction globally accessible. To post your feedback and comments, feel free to use your smart phone device or if you do not have an account, one of the available iPads provided at the gallery that have access to the META2013 guestbook account.

Tweet us at our user name @META2013GB and remember to include the hashtag #META2013

Security Guard
Through the use of a Kinect, the movements of visitors throughout the gallery are converted into visual pathways. This gives a visual representation of how long people spend with the artwork, how they move when interacting, & the order in which they choose to interact. Much like how a traditional security guard moves around the gallery, the Kinect security guard will also be moving around the space watching the different areas.

A composite with each of the different spaces will be viewable from a screen located by the bar area.
